Built by Hand, Built to Last: The Making of a Brass Bathtub

A brass bathtub isn’t just a design choice—it’s a commitment to quality and craftsmanship. These tubs aren’t rolled off an assembly line. They’re shaped, welded, and polished by hand. Here’s how it all comes together.

1. Brass Sheets Become the Base

The process starts with raw brass sheets. This alloy of copper and zinc is chosen for its durability, resistance to corrosion, and warm, golden color. The sheets are thick and heavy—strong enough to last decades but still workable with the right tools.

2. Forming the Shape

Next, the brass is cut and shaped. This part is hands-on. Using a combination of heating, hammering, and rolling, skilled workers mold the flat sheets into the form of a tub. Whether it’s a classic roll-top or a more modern silhouette, every curve and contour is done by eye and experience—not machines.

3. Welding the Pieces Together

Most tubs are made from multiple parts: the main body, the base, and sometimes decorative rims or feet. These are welded together with precision. It’s a slow process, done carefully to avoid warping the metal or leaving visible seams. Once joined, the welds are ground smooth so the tub looks seamless.

4. Polishing the Surface

Once the structure is complete, the entire tub is polished. This can take hours. The surface is buffed and refined to reach the desired finish—bright and reflective, soft and brushed, or somewhere in between. Some tubs are left raw to age naturally; others are sealed to preserve the shine.

5. Optional Interior Coating

Depending on the design, the inside of the tub may be left as polished brass or coated with enamel or a resin layer. Coatings offer a softer feel and help retain heat during long soaks.

6. Final Hardware and Inspection

Last, the feet and hardware go on. Overflow systems, drains, and other fittings are attached and tested. Everything is inspected for balance, structure, and watertight integrity before it’s ready for install.

No Two Brass Tubs Are Alike

What makes a brass bathtub special isn’t just the material—it’s the process. Each one is made by hand, shaped with care, and built to outlast trends. In a world of fast production, that kind of craftsmanship still stands out.
